Observations, statistics, and origin of multiple stars

Abstract

Star formation frequently produces systems of 2 or more stars. A predictive theory explaining the multiplicity, as well as distribution of periods and mass ratios, is absent, although its major physical ingredients are identified. In this talk I will review the data on multiplicity statistics, present recent observational results from SOAR, and discuss their relevance to understanding multiple-star formation.
